Today is Halloween or Samhain if you prefer. I love this holiday, second favorite only to Christmas. It feels a bit odd this year being the second time I won't be doing Samhain with my friend Shannon from back east. We used to do what was called Samhain Stew - basically everyone brought something to stick inthe stew and you cooked it all together. Sometimes you got good stew, sometimes not so good. I always brought egg noodles which really made the stew. Samhain, the night of divinity in several pagan faiths, also found us doing a ritual with a lot of symbolism. For the life of me I can't remember all the details except there was cider and bread as well as a symbolic plunging of man into woman using a cup and a dagger. Then the remains of the bread and cider were discared outside so the spirits of the dead could feed. Or something like that. I really wish I could remember it all.
We'd be dressed in costumne (because costume on halloween is a must) and then Shannon would try crystal gazing. The first year I celebrated Samhain with her was the first time she'd ever seen anything in her crystal. I can't remember what, but she was happy about it. Then she read Tarot cards for each of us. Normally Shannon is very good with Tarot cards, but being Samhain the night of divinity, she was eerily correct. In fact, she hit the nail on the head so well, I ended up crying as she read mine. I only allow one Tarot reading a year for myself and it's on Samhain because of this. Sadly, I won't be recieving another one from her again as it appearas she has forgotten me or moved past our friendship. So is the story of my life one could say.
I miss Samhain with her, Nikki, John and Helen. We used to have so much fun. I doubt I'll ever celebrate Samhain again as I don't have any pagan friends out here that I know of that do celebrate it (I am very pagan friendly though I don't consider myself pagan as I don't believe in any actual concrete god or goddess), but Halloween without the spiritual side is still a whole lot of fun. I also miss doing the UMWA Haunted House back in Indiana, PA, but it'll be nice for a chang eto go to a hanuted house and experience it instead of building and running one.
So, that said, it's not much, but I'm going to try and start up my own thing with Halloween here. I'm having people over (costume required) to watch a scary movie and then play a one shot RPG using the old Marvel Superheroes RPG system involving zombies. Because every Halloween needs zombies and I, being from Western Pennsylvania, know zombies. I'm also looking forward to testing out my psychological thriller side in tonight's game. It's been a long time since I used it on another person.
So, Rachael, BritMike, Cameron, Chrystal, Chloe, Decker - come on down. I'd love for Kat, Miranda, Shannon (the SLC variety), Misha, Sarah and Mykle to come as well, but they are all out of town and unable to make it. *sniffles* We'll miss you.
